With major UK production commitments from BMW in Oxford, Nissan’s hub in Sunderland, and JLR’s electric strategy in the West Midlands, demand is growing fast. On the continent, Volkswagen, Tesla, Stellantis, Renault, and others are scaling up battery gigafactories – but these plants cannot operate without a stable, local supply of refined lithium.
The EU Battery Regulation, adopted in 2023, mandates increased transparency, sustainability, and traceability for all batteries sold in Europe - including proof of responsible sourcing and embedded carbon intensity. Battery passports, due to become mandatory, will track materials from mine to market.
TVL is establishing a fully transparent supply chain in the UK, enabling greater accountability, regulatory compliance, and end-to-end traceability from raw material inputs to refined lithium products. This ensures ethical sourcing and strengthens national supply resilience.
Leveraging Teesside’s proximity to major offshore wind assets, TVL’s refining operations will be powered by renewable energy. This significantly reduces the carbon footprint of lithium production, supporting net-zero targets and helping customers meet their own sustainability commitments.
TVL’s project is fully aligned with the EU’s goal of sourcing 40% of strategic materials — like lithium — from local processing by 2030. Our facility contributes to this objective by providing the UK and Europe with a secure, domestic alternative to imported, high-emissions supply chains.
As Europe builds out renewable capacity, lithium-ion batteries are becoming critical to grid stabilisation and energy storage. Demand for lithium in storage applications is forecast to grow by 25% per year through 2030, driven by national targets for renewable integration and net-zero emissions.
